Non-surgical Rhinoplasty

A non-surgical rhinoplasty utilises a filler material to alter the shape and position of the nose.

Why have a non-surgical rhinoplasty?

The principal advantage of the technique is that it avoids a surgical procedure, however by definition the treatment is not permanent. A non-surgical rhinoplasty (nose job) can be effectively used to correct these nasal appearances: a nose with a small hump, a nose that has a depression along the bridge (termed saddle nose deformity), nasal collapse from previous trauma, droopy nasal tip, beak-shaped nasal bridge (termed Polly beak). A non-surgical nose job can also be used to improve certain features of a patient’s nose who is not yet ready for a surgical rhinoplasty and to refine or augment the appearance of a person’s nose who has previously undergone rhinoplasty.

About non-surgical rhinoplasty

Precautions are required in non-surgical rhinoplasty, as the nose is an intricate structure with important anatomy that must be preserved. There are important blood vessels in the nose that need to be avoided with non-surgical rhinoplasty and these techniques should ideally be performed by a surgeon who is also experienced in surgical rhinoplasty with knowledge of the underlying anatomy. Caution is also required to ensure a sterile environment is used to maximise rapid recovery and reduce the risk of infection. The most common filler used is a type of hyaluronic acid that naturally dissipates, most results typically last up for over one year. Carefully placed filler treatments add volume to specific points on the nose. At The Centre on Harley Street London, we use dermal fillers designed to augment the shape and show instant results that last 12 to 18 months.

What does a non surgical rhinoplasty involve?

Our team will use a numbing local anaesthesia cream to reduce discomfort from the procedure. The numbing cream is specially made for The Harley Street Face Clinic and was designed in Beverly Hills and manufactured in Germany. After this, a small anaesthetic injection is applied in the already numb area. The dermal filler is then used to augment the chin and jawline. At The Centre on Harley Street London, we used ‘fast-healing’ techniques that utilise a cannula to administer the filler for most patients, this results in much less swelling and bruising than older needle-based techniques.

Additionally, dermal fillers can be used on other facial areas at the same time as on the cheeks to give an enhanced natural result. We specialise in ‘natural-looking results’, common areas for filler enhancement include the cheeks, chin & jawline, nasolabial folds, eye area (termed tear trough), the nose, and lip enhancement.

Patient 2: Irregularities in the bridge, characterized by slightly crooked nose or unevenness in patients with thin skin, can be smoothened out and enhanced with a non-surgical rhinoplasty.

When will I see the results from non-surgical rhinoplasty?

At The Centre, you can expect to see relatively ‘instant results’ with our filler treatments. There will be minor swelling after filler treatment that for most patients resolves overnight, more rarely there can be mild swelling for 5-days (in approximately 5%). There is a small possibility, <2% of a minor bruise, this will resolve over a few days. We use the latest in technology to enhance recovery such as ‘no-needle” cannula techniques that enhance recovery. For most patients, the final results of nasal fillers will be evident approximately 5-days after the swelling subsides. With our techniques (cannula based technique, application of filler at deeper levels) and filler choice will last 12 – 18months, although results may vary from patient-to-patient.

Will I look natural with non-surgical rhinoplasty?

At The Centre, we specialise in natural-looking results. We believe in a natural augmentation of the nose area. Our aestheticians have pioneered research in the area of facial beauty and this has been published in the mainstream media and multiple TV channels. We have also developed the application of the Phi Golden Ratio (used in many of the most famous Renaissance paintings of Leonardo Da Vinci) to the human face and we have multiple trained specialists at The Centre to apply the principles of this facial balance and beautification technique. At The Centre we have treated many celebrities and A-listers with these techniques to enhance natural beauty, a term we describe as beautification of the face, enhancing the natural Phi Golden Ratio lines.

Of key importance with filler rejuvenation is avoiding excessive filler use as this no longer looks natural or beautiful. The key application of filler in specific areas of the face differs depending on each individual’s facial characteristics. The application of nose filler is different in masculine and feminine faces. In women, it is focused along the Phi Golden Ratio lines and a softer feminine shape. In men, it is focused along a straighter nose profile. If you have already had treatment that has been excessive it may be necessary to dissolve the existing filler or wait for the filler to resolve. At The Centre we specialise in natural-looking results.

Will I experience any discomfort or pain?

We use a combination of treatments to minimise discomfort, these include the use of a powerful numbing local anaesthetic cream that is specially made us. We use a state-of-the-art cannula (no-needle) technique to minimise discomfort.

We use fillers that have incorporated anaesthetic into the injectable fillers to increase patient comfort.
At The Centre, we use additional numbing and vibration devises that use the Nobel Prize-winning research on ‘The Gate Control Theory of Pain” to minimise discomfort.

At The Centre, we take the above measures to ensure most patients only experience minor discomfort.

Are there any risks or complications?

Studies on the safety of fillers have reported filler treatments as relatively safe with few side effects when completed by trained specialists. Recorded adverse events are usually minor including temporary injection site redness for less than three days. Patients may occasionally report temporary symptoms of redness, swelling, discomfort, lumps-bumpy changes, bruising, itching or change in colour. Infection is very rare however it is important that the treatment is completed in a CQC (Care Quality Commission) registered site and sterile precautions when having filler treatments. At The Centre, all treatments are completed in our specialist Facial Centre on Harley Street. Serious side effects such as damage to the skin (termed Necrosis) or damage to vision have very rarely been reported. Our staff has pioneered the teaching of other doctors to avoid these serious issues in both National and International Conferences since 2012. Fillers are currently lacking from regulation, which remains a controversy in the UK. Precautions can be taken with competent practitioners to avoid these serious complications.

What treatments are best avoided in the nose?

We use a combination of treatments to focus on a natural rejuvenation that is both long-lasting and safe. Over the last 5-years, fillers have become more and more popular as both the product has reached new levels of quality and safety and our techniques and skills at using them have matured with experience. Our team has been using non-surgical treatments for patients for over ten years. At The Centre, we believe that it is important to avoid potential issues and there are certain products that are associated with high risk, including non-HA products, as in some patients this can result in serious long-term issues. At The Centre, we specialise in facial treatments and only advocate ‘Gold-Standard products with an established record of safety. Some patients may have characteristics of their nose that are unsuited to filler treatment, and these patients are better suited to a surgical Rhinoplasty correction.

How long does a non-surgical rhinoplasty last?

The longevity of your results will depend on the viscosity of the dermal filler that is used and your own individual bodily response to dermal fillers. Here at The Harley Street Face Clinic in London we use only clinically-proven and approved dermal fillers, for longer-lasting results and a natural look. Expect your non-surgical rhinoplasty results to last approximately 12 months, after which, you can return to the clinic for another treatment.

What do dermal fillers for a non-surgical rhinoplasty do?

When used in the nasal area, dermal fillers will instantly lift the areas of the skin that need more support and can create definition and symmetry where required. They are injected in to the underlying skin tissues and create a ‘scaffold’ for the uppermost layers. They can disguise a bump on the nose, produce more of a tip, even out asymmetry and re-shape the nose for a more attractive appearance.

How long do dermal fillers for the nose take to work?

Results will be seen straight away as the dermal filler will physically lift and support the tissues of the skin and can be moulded in to shape by your practitioner. There may be some slight swelling however, immediately after your treatment which can mask the true results, but this will ease in a day or so. The product can take up to 2 weeks to fully settle and this is typically when optimum results can be experienced. After such time, you may wish to return to the clinic for a top up or re-balancing which might be required in some cases, but this is usually not necessary.

How often do you need to get a non-surgical rhinoplasty using dermal fillers?

The longevity of your results somewhat depends on your individual response to dermal fillers and how quickly your body will metabolise the product injected. Most dermal fillers used in the nose are longer lasting as they are more viscous and contain a cross-linking agent, which stabilises the product and makes it ‘thicker’. At The Harley Street Face Clinic London, we use products that are proven to provide the highest safety records as well as exceptional performance. Some patients only need to have a non-surgical rhinoplasty once a year. However, expect to visit your practitioner every 6 to 12 months for repeat treatments. You will get to know how your body responds to the treatment and how often you will need a treatment.

Is there any downtime or aftercare required with a non-surgical rhinoplasty using dermal fillers?

Most patients have minimal recovery time and walk out of the clinic and can continue with normal lifestyle activities. You may have some slight swelling, tenderness and in some rare cases, bruising following your treatment. However, this will ease in a day or so and will not prevent you undertaking your normal everyday activities. Aftercare will include avoiding saunas, hot baths, steam or excessive exercise for 24 hours post-procedure, as well as avoiding rubbing or touching the area for at least 48 hours. It’s important to be careful with your face after any cosmetic treatment and to use facial products that are approved for post-procedure care.

What, if any, are the possible side effects of nose fillers?

On rare occasions there can be a serious issue with fillers to the nose, resulting in damage to vision. For this reason it is important to see a specialist who has knowledge of the underlying anatomy of the face and how to avoid these issues. At The Harley Street Face Clinic, our practitioners are medically qualified to administer the treatment safely, there are multiple important steps that are necessary to ensure a good result free of issues. For some patients there maybe some slight swelling, bruising and tenderness may be experienced for 24 to 48 hours after your dermal filler treatment, but this is very normal and can be treated with ice and arnica gel to speed up the healing process.
