An introduction to jawline fillers

The contours of the jawline can have a huge impact on how the face looks overall. From a head on perspective to looking at a side profile, if the jaw is weak or affected by the ageing process our face may look older, disproportionate or asymmetrical. In years gone by, only surgical methods could correct or augment the jawline, but this isn’t for everyone and can be considered as too invasive for some milder cases, or for younger patients.

At The Harley Street Face Clinic, we believe in offering our patients both surgical and non-surgical options to improve their looks and recommend dermal fillers for use in this area, to sculpt and re-structure the jawline.

Dr Julian De Silva is one of the UKs premier consultant plastic surgeons and offers jawline fillers for his male and female patients.

How do dermal fillers work?

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances of varying viscosities (thicknesses). Most of which now contain hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a substance that has been revered in the media of late, due to its intensely hydrating properties. It’s found naturally in the body and is referred to as a bodily ‘sugar’. It can aid hydration and lubrication of the eyes, the joints, connective tissues and of course, the skin.

As we age, HA is depleted and for the skin, that’s bad news! Hydration and that plump, youthful glow can be lost, making the skin look crêpey and forming a sagging appearance, all contributing to a lower face droop. Unlike permanent collagen fillers, HA dermal fillers offer temporary augmentation and support of the skin tissues, both to re-structure and support them.

In recent years, injection techniques have developed, in order to offer a face-lifting effect and this is where dermal fillers come in to their own, when it comes to re-structuring and sculpting the jawline.

Am I suitable for jawline contouring using dermal fillers?

Not everyone who needs jawline contouring is of a ‘certain age’. It’s true, that the jawline can suffer as we get older, with the loss of vital tissues such as bone mass, muscle tone and fat in the face, leading to sagging skin on the lower face and the formation of jowls. However, the jawline can be in need of help when a patient is not experiencing the signs of ageing. If it is a weak jawline which needs correction, specifically placed dermal fillers can make a world of difference. For the older patient, it may be that not only dermal fillers can be used in the jawline, but working on the cheeks with this treatment can lift and support the lower skin tissues, creating a face-lifting effect without a surgical scalpel, overnight hospital stay or extensive downtime.

What happens during a jawline contouring treatment?

After an initial consultation Dr Julian De Silva on Harley Street, and on deciding that jawline contouring using dermal fillers is right for you, you will then be invited back to the clinic for treatment. You’ll be asked to complete some standard consent forms and then the procedure can begin.

A topical numbing cream will be applied to the areas for treatment. After around 30 to 40 minutes this will have taken effect and your skin will be cleansed and sterilised. Should your practitioner feel that more comprehensive numbing is required, an injectable anaesthetic will also be administered, for your complete comfort.

After which, your practitioner will use a cannula (a less invasive instrument than a needle and used widely nowadays to minimise bruising and tissue damage) to inject small quantities of a specially chosen dermal filler, in to the areas of concern. Once the product has been placed in to the skin, your practitioner will mould, shape and massage it in to place, for a pleasing result. Once this is complete, you’ll be given some very simple aftercare instructions and will be able to leave the clinic and go back to your normal daily activities, though you will need to avoid strenuous exercise, hot baths, showers and steam rooms and rubbing or touching the treatment area for some hours after your treatment.

Jawline filler results and aftercare

Patient safety is our number one priority at the Harley Street Face Clinic, and this follows on with the aftercare advice prescribed to you by Dr De Silva.

As dermal fillers are physical and physiological augmenters of the skin’s tissues, you will see some results straight away (though you will need to take in to account that after your treatment you might experience some slight swelling, tenderness or bruising, but this is quite normal and should subside very quickly). As well as immediate results, you will also notice an improvement of your skin’s tone and texture as the HA gets to work and the skin sends a healing response, resulting in accelerated collagen production.

All these effects should leave you with a more sculpted jawline and tighter, more toned skin.

Expect the results to last between 6 and 18 months. After such time you can return to the clinic for another treatment. The beauty of dermal fillers is that with each session, your practitioner can monitor how your face changes with time and tailor the procedure to your individual facial anatomy and requirements. This means you’ll experience natural-looking results to suit your skin’s architecture and facial contours, every time you visit us.

Jawline contouring using dermal fillers is a quick, safe and effective way to correct any imperfections in this area and leave you with a more youthful appearance and smoother complexion for years to come, with no need for invasive surgery.
