Chin & jawline filler enhancement

A small chin and weak jawline often result in facial imbalance that results in a less attractive and weak appearance.

Why have a chin & jawline fillers?

Filler to the chin and jawline may provide more facial balance and harmony. Chin deficiency is usually apparent on looking at a person’s side profile, where the chin should align with a vertical line drawn through the philtrum (junction between the nose and upper lip).

At The Harley Street Face Clinic, we use fillers and chin implants to enhance facial balance and proportions. In addition, there can be additional changes in the chin accelerated by ageing, including a more prominent chin crease below the lips caused by tissue loss and sagging skin. This can lead to more sagging skin, resulting in a dimpled appearance of the chin or a ‘witchy chin look’.

The first image shows the normal position of the chin in relation to the lips. In a person with good facial proportions, the lower lips are 1-2mm behind the upper lid and the chin is 1-2mm behind the lower lip. There are variations in facial harmony and balance based on genetics, gender and ethnicity.

The third figure shows the position of a recessed chin which is positioned (>5mm) behind a vertical green line drawn through the lips. With chin augmentation, the chin is moved forward and the relative distance from the lips to the chin is reduced.

Our team uses reference points on the face to evaluate proportions. However, the artistry of chin augmentation also includes taking into account gender, ethnicity and chin shape.

Enhance your natural features

Chin fillers provide the face with improved proportions and define the jaw so that facial features are in better harmony. It can be done non-permanently with the use of fillers or more permanently through surgery with a chin implant, but this involves downtime with bruising and swelling up to six weeks after treatment. Chin fillers offer a non-invasive, non-surgical chin augmentation treatment that’s quick, safe and effective for a natural, balanced aesthetic appearance.

What does chin filler involve at The Harley Street Face Clinic?

  • A proprietary anaesthetic cream is applied to numb the area that will receive the injection. Designed in Beverly Hills and manufactured in Germany, it is made especially for the Harley Street Face Clinic. We also apply a small anaesthetic injection to the areas and then administer the filler to the chin and jawline.
  • Our no needle cannula technique results in less swelling and bruising than needle techniques, so there is less recovery time.
  • As well as the chin and jawline, we can place fillers elsewhere for an enhanced, natural result, including the cheeks, nasolabial folds, tear troughs (around the eyes), the nose and the lips.

When will I see the results from chin fillers?

Results are noticeable immediately with filler treatments to the chin and jaw line. You may have some minor side effects that resolve within days, including

  • Swelling (up to 5% of patients)
  • Bruising (less than 2% of patients)

The final results of the treatment are evident approximately 5 days post-swelling. Although results vary depending on each individual, our techniques have long-lasting results of between 18-24 months.

Will I look natural with chin fillers?

Our results are entirely natural-looking as we take a conservative approach to create a natural augmentation of the chin and jawline. At the forefront of research into facial beauty, our clinicians are highly skilled and sought after for their expertise, appearing in mainstream media publications and on national television.

Using the Phi Golden Ratio

We apply the Phi Golden Ratio (used in Da Vinci’s Renaissance paintings) to the human face to assess balance and guide us in our treatment recommendations and apply the principles of facial balance to our beautification technique.

Each facial characteristic determines where the filler should be placed and it is different on male and female faces. Whereas filler tends to be focused along the cheek in women, it is mainly along the jawline and chin in men.

Will I experience any discomfort or pain?

We keep discomfort to a minimum by:

  • Applying our own proprietary numbing cream to the areas about to be treated
  • Using the cannula no-needle technique where possible
  • Using fillers that have anaesthesia incorporated into their formula
  • Additional numbing and vibration devices are used to minimize discomfort, such as the Nobel Prize-winning “The Gate Control Theory of Pain”

Are there any risks or complications of fillers?

  • Fillers are generally very safe if they are administered by trained specialists. There are few reported adverse events, and they are relatively minor.
  • Side-effects following injections tend to be temporary and include injection site redness, swelling, lumps and bumps, itching and bruising. They tend to disappear within days.
  • Infection is rare, as are serious skin damage (necrosis) and damage to vision.
  • Controversially, fillers remain unregulated in the UK. Therefore, it is important to have your treatment at a CQC (Quality Care Commission) registered site, administered by a practitioner with the requisite skills to avoid serious complications.
  • All treatments with us are completed in our specialist Facial Centre on Harley Street by staff who are experts who teach other doctors.

What treatments are best avoided in the chin?

Our combination of treatments are safe and long-lasting and geared toward a natural rejuvenation.

As fillers have become more popular, they have reached new levels of safety and quality. However, there are some products that have higher risks in both the permanent and semi-permanent fillers which can have long-term repercussions. Thus, our fillers are Gold standard, FDA-approved and hyaluronic acid-based, which is found naturally in the body and doesn’t post any biocompatibility issues.

Additionally, some highly marketed products have shown little in the way of results, including Ultherapy, Thermage and thread lifts and so we do not offer these treatments.

We may recommend that individuals with the marked recession of the chin may be better suited to surgical correction, such as with a chin implant.

How long does a chin and jaw filler enhancement last?

This mostly depends on the viscosity of the product that is used and your own individual bodily response to dermal fillers. Here at The Harley Street Face Clinic, we use only clinically proven and approved dermal fillers, for longer-lasting results and a natural look. Expect your chin and jawline enhancement results to last between 8 and 24 months, after which, you can return to the clinic for another treatment.

What do dermal fillers for the chin and jawline do?

Dermal fillers for the chin and jawline will instantly create a scaffold effect for the skin as well as lift areas that need to be supported. They are injected into the underlying skin tissues and are then moulded to the desired shape.

They can create more definition and over time will assist with the general tone and hydration of the skin tissues, due to the hyaluronic acid which is present within the dermal fillers that we use here at The Harley Street Face Clinic. We have a customised technique that uses two different types of filler to enhance the jawline and chin to improve the shape. This enhancement is more natural as the shape and consistency simulate bone, unlike softer fillers.

At The Centre, we are also able to advise on long-term solutions such as a chin implant that requires no ongoing maintenance.

How long do dermal fillers for the chin and jawline take to work?

The results will be seen Immediately as the dermal filler will physically lift and support the tissues of the skin and help to create a more pleasing shape to your chin and jawline. There may be some slight swelling, immediately after your treatment which can mean that your true results might take a few days. Dermal fillers can take up to 2 weeks to fully settle in and this is typically when optimum results can be experienced. After such time, you may wish to return to the clinic for a top-up or any re-balancing or tweaking which might be required.

How often do you need to get a chin and jawline enhancement using dermal fillers?

The longevity of your results will mostly depend on your individual response to dermal fillers and how quickly your body will metabolise the product injected. Some lifestyle factors are also linked to the longevity of results (such as smoking, excessive sun exposure and weight loss or gain). Dermal fillers for the chin and jawline tend to be long lasting as they are more viscous and contain a cross-linking agent, which stabilises the product and makes it ‘thicker’. You may find that a chin and jawline enhancement using dermal fillers can last anything up to 12-18 months.

Is there any downtime or aftercare required with a chin and jawline enhancement using dermal fillers?

You might experience some slight swelling, tenderness and in some rare cases, bruising following your treatment, as this is a procedure that uses a needle or cannula. However, this will ease in a day or so and will not prevent you from undertaking your normal everyday activities or going to work. Aftercare will include avoiding saunas, hot baths, steam rooms and excessive exercise for 24 hours post-procedure, as well as avoiding rubbing or touching the area for as long as possible. It’s important to be careful with your face after any cosmetic treatment and to use facial products that are approved for post-procedure care, such as mineral makeup and gentle facial cleansers.

What, if any, are the possible side effects of chin and jawline enhancement?

In extremely rare cases, there can be an allergic reaction to the product. This tends to happen however when the treatment has been administered by non-medical professionals using counterfeit or ‘cheap’ dermal fillers and who are not properly trained. At The Harley Street Face Clinic, we only use FDA approved, tested and proven dermal fillers, renowned for their safety records, their purity and their stability and all our practitioners are medically qualified and fully trained to administer dermal fillers safely and effectively. More often, some slight swelling, bruising and tenderness may be experienced for 24 to 48 hours after your dermal filler treatment, but this is very normal, as any injectable treatment using a needle or cannula is creating trauma to the skin. Therefore this response is very common and nothing to be concerned about. You can ease any swelling, bruising or tenderness by using an ice pack or arnica gel.
