Botox London

The first signs of the ageing process are usually noticeable in the face. As we age, our skin loses its elasticity and lines begin to form.

Wrinkles often occur in areas of the face where expression lines are the strongest. Botox® (Botulinum Toxin) is a safe and proven treatment to effectively rejuvenate the face.

We know how to apply just the right amount of Botox® in very small dosages, targeting specific areas of the face to achieve a natural-looking, younger version of you.

What is Botulinum Toxin (Botox®)?

Botox® is a medicine that acts as a muscle relaxing injection and is used by millions around the world to improve the appearance of facial lines associated with movement. Botox® is the brand name for Botulinum Toxin, a protein that is produced by the clostridium botulinum bacterium.

This popular cosmetic injection effectively smooths out fine lines and wrinkles, restoring a youthful, rejuvenated appearance. The treatment can also lift eyebrows and the corners of the mouth.

A non-surgical treatment, it relaxes the skin due to the paralyzing effect that the injections have on the facial muscles. It has been used for many years in the medical and cosmetic industries and is proven to be both safe and effective.

How does Botox® work?

Botox® helps relax muscles that when contracted create lines and wrinkles. The injections are one of the most affordable, fastest working, safe and effective non-surgical ageing treatments available.

During treatment at our comfortable London clinic, Botox® is injected into a defined area. It is strongly diluted and placed in extremely small quantities directly into the muscle fibres that are responsible for the lines that arise during facial expressions.

For example, it can be injected into the forehead, frown lines, crow’s feet and lines around the mouth area. The injections block the stimulus transfer from nerves to muscles, resulting in a relaxing effect that smoothes out wrinkles, lines, and creases. It can also be used to decrease the facial volume or lift certain features, such as the eyebrows.

Results of Botox® Harley Street London

Botox® is a fast, non-invasive treatment that takes only 15 minutes to perform. You should not expect any downtime afterwards. The injection starts to work within three days and reaches the maximum rejuvenating effect within two weeks.

As Botox® is a natural substance that is broken down by the body, the effect of the treatment disappears over time (between three to five months). The treatment can then be repeated at The Harley Street Face Clinic in London for long-lasting rejuvenating results.

Frequently Asked Questions about Botulinum Toxin (Botox®)

How does Botulinum Toxin work?

Botulinum toxin is regarded as a non-surgical treatment. The treatment involves several tiny injections of Botox® that are administered directly into the skin to facial lines associated with movement. Treatment typically takes around 15 minutes and no anaesthetic is necessary as discomfort is minimal.

At The Harley Street Face Clinic we will give you specific aftercare instructions that will give you the best outcome. We also recommend you book a post-treatment appointment after 2 weeks so that we can assess the results and perform a free top-up if necessary.

When will I see the results from Botox?

Botox® treatments usually take effect after 3-5 days and take 2 weeks for the maximum effect to come. There is a small possibility of minor bruising, this will resolve over a few days.

After two weeks, the effects of the treatment softens. The effect lasts between 3 to 6 months (average 4 months). Patients who have had several injections often find the effect persists longer in specific areas such as the forehead.

What are the possible Side Effects of Botox®?

Side effects of treatment are generally relatively mild, temporary and resolved without additional treatment. There may be mild discomfort or a stinging sensation as the injection is administered. Some mild redness and swelling for several hours after treatment are common, and uncommonly (less than 5%) a bruise.

Occasionally there can be asymmetry, and at two weeks a minor touch up treatment can be completed. Very rarely, there can be a temporary mild weakness of the upper eyelid or brow (termed ptosis) with drooping of the eyelid or brow, typically lasting a week. This is temporary and eye drops can be prescribed to counter this effect. All side effects are temporary and resolved without additional treatment.

Can other treatments be used at the same time as Botox®?

Over time our cheeks can flatten and our original natural cheek curvature can start to soften and appear lower. Ageing changes also take place under the surface of the skin where the gradual loss of supportive tissue structures and the long-term effects of gravity means that larger areas of your face lose volume and shape. These changes particularly affect the cheeks and chin.

Carefully placed filler treatments add volume to beauty points or replace volume where it has been lost. Advanced dermal fillers can, therefore, restore our ageing loss of volume in the cheeks, help replenish hollows, and work to build up cheekbones.

Although different HA Filler products can be used (including Restylane®, Juvederm®, Voluma® and Volbella®) these have characteristics that favour improving the cheeks and are designed to tackle larger areas of volume loss for a flattering and refreshed look that lasts.

What does Botox® Treatment involve at The Harley Street Face Clinic?

At The Harley Street Face Clinic we have pioneered the use of customised Botox® to each individual person. We use a range of treatments to reduce discomfort from the procedure, including cooling agents and numbing cream specially made for The Harley Street Face Clinic, designed in Beverly Hills and manufactured in Germany.

At The Harley Street Face Clinic we only use the “Gold-Standard” original brand of Botox® and a new vial is used for every patient. We use ‘Fast-Healing’ techniques that utilize a super-fine needle for most patients to administer the injection, which results in less bruising and discomfort than older needle-based techniques.

Will I Look Natural with Botox®?

At The Harley Street Face Clinic, we believe in a natural augmentation of the face and specialise in natural-looking results. Additionally, dermal fillers can be used for other facial areas at the same time to give an enhanced natural result.

For some patients we provide super conservative treatments, these maintain some movement while softening facial lines. These specialist treatments provide a more natural result but tend to last for less than four months.

Our facial plastic surgery background has enabled us to pioneer research in the area of facial beauty and this has been published in the mainstream media and multiple TV Channels. The Harley Street Face Clinic developed the application of the Phi Golden Ratio (used in many of the most famous Renaissance paintings of Leonardo Da Vinci) to the human face and has multiple trained specialists at The Harley Street Face Clinic to apply the principles of this facial balance and beautification.

We have treated many celebrities and A-listers with these techniques to enhance natural beauty, a term we describe as beautification of the face, enhancing the natural Phi Golden Ratio Lines. We do not like uplifted tails to your eyebrow that has a done appearance. If you have already had a treatment that has been excessive it may be necessary to wait for the existing treatment to resolve.

Will I experience any discomfort or pain?

We use a combination of measures to minimise discomfort. These include the use of:

  • a powerful numbing local anaesthetic cream that is specially made for The Harley Street Face Clinic
  • a state-of-the-art super fine needle made in Japan to minimise discomfort
  • an additional numbing and vibration device that uses Nobel Prize-winning research on ‘The Gate Control Theory of Pain”.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Botox® last?

Results can last anywhere from 3 to 8 months. This all depends on certain lifestyle factors that can affect the overall quality of the skin and how long the facial muscles are affected by the toxin.

If you have been having Botox® for many years, you might find that you need to return to the clinic sooner than someone that has just started having this treatment. However, this is largely due to the fact that as we age, the skin will start to change in tone and texture and the facial muscles become less toned and tight. We notice these changes unfold, as well as the treatment ‘wearing off’.

What does Botox® do?

Botox® is a neurotoxin that blocks the nerve receptors responsible for stimulating the facial muscles to create expressions and thus, forming expression lines and dynamic wrinkles. The product itself only stays within the system for a short time, but the effect on the facial muscles can last several months after the Botox® has been metabolised by the body.

It will not fill static wrinkles, hydrate or improve the quality of the skin. However, if you have regular treatments you can prevent some further expression lines from forming.

How long does Botox® take to work?

This depends on the individual. However, in most cases, you will see a noticeable result from 24 to 48 hours after your treatment. Some brands of toxin do take longer to see results (such as BoCouture) but in most cases, optimum results are fully seen after around 2 weeks.

After this time, you may wish to return to the clinic for a top-up or any corrections that might be required. However, in most cases, this is not necessary.

How often do you need to get Botox®?

Botox® results can last anything between 3 and 8 months. However, every patient is different and what might last 5 months for one person may only last a couple of months for another.

There are various factors that contribute to the longevity of results, including:

  • the individual’s bodily response to the product to lifestyle choices such as smoking,
  • excessive sun exposure or
  • other treatments which vibrate the muscles and skin tissues or treatments using radiofrequency or lasers.

We recommend most patients return for a Botox® treatment every 6 months and would not advise having more than three treatments in any 12 month period.

Is there any downtime or aftercare required with Botox®?

There is no clinical downtime with Botox® and the procedure is very straightforward. You can return to your normal daily activities immediately after the treatment as long as you adhere to the aftercare advice that your practitioner offers you.

Aftercare is minimal but will include:

  • avoiding hot baths, saunas and steam rooms for 24 hours post-procedure,
  • not bending forward or rubbing the face for 6 hours post-treatment, and
  • avoiding strenuous exercise for at least 6 hours.

What, if any are the possible side effects of Botox®?

As with any injectable, non-surgical cosmetic treatment, there is always an element of risk. In extremely rare cases, the patient could have an allergic reaction but this is very unlikely. In rare cases, a patient might experience a drooping eyebrow due to the Botox® relaxing facial muscles in the forehead area, but this can be corrected with medication and again, is very rare.

More common responses can be temporary headaches or flu-like symptoms, a feeling of heaviness in the treated areas and slight swelling, tenderness or bruising at the injection sites.
