Improving our looks doesn’t always mean having to undergo invasive surgery. In fact many of us may be noticing small changes and subtle skin concerns, as a result of the natural ageing process and in many cases, plastic surgery really isn’t necessary. At The Harley Street Face Clinic, in the heart of London and led by plastic surgeon Dr Julian De Silva, we believe that in many cases, a non-surgical approach to facial rejuvenation may be all that’s required to reduce lines and wrinkles, lift, sculpt and tone the facial contours and take years away, without the invasive measures perhaps required more later in life.
We have listed 5 top injectable treatments that our patients in London swear by, to maintain a youthful appearance and fresh, wide-awake look
Arguably the world’s favourite anti-ageing injectable treatment. Botulinum toxin type A, a naturally-occurring protein relaxes the facial muscles which cause dynamic expression lines by restricting the nerve impulses which send messages to these muscles to move. When injected in tiny quantities, the facial muscles are not paralysed to the point where no expression is possible, but slightly temporarily relaxed. This in turn smooths the lines which are caused by facial expressions such as forehead lines, crow’s feet, Glabellar lines (lines between the eyebrows) and bunny lines (lines down the sides of the nose). Botox also offers skin rejuvenation in other areas of the face, such as the chin, neck lines and some lines around the mouth. It can also be used to treat excess sweating, migraines and teeth grinding.
Dermal fillers are now equally as popular as Botox, but they perform very differently to wrinkle-smoothing injections using a toxin. Dermal fillers consist of hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a naturally occurring substance within the body. As we age, we lose HA considerably, which leads to dehydrated skin. The loss of HA also means that collagen is restricted in its production. Collagen helps to keep skin looking youthful, plump and elastic. When these substances diminish, lines, wrinkles, volume loss, dehydration and skin sagging of the face and neck can occur.
A wide-range of facial concerns can be treated with dermal fillers including specialised treatments such as non-surgical rhinoplasty (nose job). The following are some of our most popular amongst our London-based patients –
Many patents come to us as they want natural enhancement and do now want really large lips. Lip fillers can be used conservatively to enhance lips while remaining discreet and natural Due to their popularity amongst certain famous celebrities, models and actors, and when performed expertly by a medical-professional, such as our team here at The Harley Street Face Clinic, the results can mean the difference between nice lips and stunning lips. When a HA dermal filler is injected in to the lips, it can offer asymmetry correction, augmentation (volumisation), improvements in lip profiling and projection, re-shaping the upper and / or lower lips and helping to balance the lips with the rest of the facial features.
Having high and sculpted cheek bones is key to a youthful appearance. As we age, we lose volume in the cheeks which can mean that the skin around the lower facial area can droop, causing jowls. When dermal fillers are used in the cheek bone area, they can offer a scaffold for the lower face, lifting the skin and preventing the possibility of jowls to appear. The facial shape can be compromised due to natural ageing and skin sagging. When the face begins to look squarer in its appearance, with more fullness along the jaw line, this can give it a more ageing look. The sculpting of a supporting substance around the cheek area can also restore to the face a more youthful, oval shape.
The tear trough area (the area under the eyes) can succumb to swelling, dark circles and puffiness as we age. This is due to bone loss around the orbital area as well as a reduction of the fat and muscle that support the skin around the eyes. When we inject the tear trough area with a specially-formulated dermal filler, specific to this indication, we can lift out the hollow areas, smooth any lines and wrinkles, and in some cases can even reduce the appearance of dark circles. Many of our patients comment that after a tear trough treatment, using dermal fillers, they appear younger and more wide-awake and takes years off their appearance.
A weak or sagging jawline can age the face, considerably. The loosening of the skin around this area, along with loss of volume in the cheeks means that the chin and jawline area can suffer. We can use dermal fillers to re-sculpt, lift and augment the chin and jawline, not only to create a more chiselled appearance, but to assist with facial profile balancing. This can mean a tighter, more toned jawline and lifted appearance as well as more balance to the side-view of the face. We often enhance the jaw line using a calcium based filler to simulate bone and provide added jaw line definition.
