Vampire Facial: Social Media Hyped and Highly Effective

Posted on December 16, 2021

A vampire facial or PRP treatment is a popular procedure for the face.

With the social media hype around the vampire facial, many people become willing to spend money on this PRP (platelet-rich plasma) treatment.

But does this treatment really deserve the hype? Should you consider getting a vampire facial? If yes, what are the benefits this PRP treatment offers?

To help you make a proper decision about this treatment, I am here to tell you my findings based on research and experience.

In this article, I will explain what a vampire facial is, how it works, and why it is popular. I will also talk about the benefits of a vampire facial and walk you through the whole process.

What Is a Vampire Facial?

Also known as microneedling with PRP, a vampire facial is a cosmetic treatment that involves your own blood.

In a nutshell, a medical practitioner draws blood from your arm. Then, they will separate your platelets. The final substance will then be applied on your face.

A vampire facial offers many benefits including smoother and younger-looking skin.

In particular, a vampire facial combines microneedling and PRP.

microneedling involves short, tiny, and fine needles. These needles puncture your skin and can range from 0.5 to 2.5 millimeters.

Given their size, the needles do not hurt. They only feel like tiny pinpricks that go skin-deep.

These needles are used to injure the skin. By doing this, a vampire facial triggers your body to naturally heal itself. During this process, your body produces collagen and elastin, two proteins crucial to maintaining a youthful look.

After this, PRP (aka the blood drawn from you) is applied back to your skin.

As its name implies, PRP contains a high concentration of platelets. It also contains a high concentration of growth factors. These help tissue to heal and repair, treating several types of skin problems.

A vampire facial got its name from its drawing-blood nature.

Why Is It Called a Vampire Facial?

Interestingly, there are two main reasons why the internet called this PRP treatment a vampire facial.

For one, this PRP treatment involves plasma, a liquid component, taken from your blood. To do this, medical or cosmetic practitioners have to draw your blood first.

Then they use certain equipment to separate your blood into its components. Next, they will get rid of the excess, and apply platelet-rich plasma on your face.

Since the procedure involves drawing blood (like a vampire does to its victims), the treatment became known as vampire facial.

Another reason why the internet called this treatment a vampire facial is the results it brings. Vampires are known to have glowing, smooth, supple, and young-looking skin.

In addition, vampires do not age. As a result, the internet decided to call the treatment a vampire facial.

What is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a substance that promotes or encourages healing when injected into the body.

To understand what PRP is, it’s crucial to know what plasma is.

PRP’s main component is plasma, an element of your blood that contains growth factors or proteins. These substances support cell growth. They also help with blood clotting.

Given plasma’s benefits, scientists found a way to isolate plasma from blood and then concentrating it for various medical purposes.

The concept behind this is that PRP, when injected into damaged tissues will prompt your body to promote healing and growing new, healthy cells.

Since plasma contains growth factors, scientists thought that the body’s tissues will heal quicker.

In addition, PRP contains up to five times the number of platelets found in regular circulating blood inside your body. In particular, PRP contains substances such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor (TGF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), and other bioactive proteins.

A PRP for face treatment also stimulates collagen production. Collagen is a protein crucial to maintaining a youthful look. It keeps your skin smooth, tight, plump, and supple.

In addition, collagen helps reduce fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, and open pores. It also improves the overall health of your skin.

All of the said substances help with skin rejuvenation.

Moreover, PRP can be applied on the scalp to promote hair growth. This serves as a popular treatment for baldness or thinning of hair.

Aside from the well-known vampire facial, elite athletes have also used PRP to help heal their injuries.

PRP for Face: How Does It Work?

Blood placed in a centrifuge separates into three specific layers: plasma, platelets & white blood cells, and red blood cells.

The plasma goes on top. The platelets go in the middle, and the red blood cells go to the bottom.

When the platelets in the plasma get concentrated, magic occurs. To get a high concentration of platelets in plasma, all four components of the blood get separated by density.

The platelets then get injected into the plasma, excluding the white and red blood cells.

The platelets extracted from your blood contain pockets called alpha granules. These granules produce a high concentration of growth factors― over 20, to be specific.

These factors can effectively promote wound healing. They can also improve your skin’s volume, elasticity, and texture.

When a medical or cosmetic practitioner reintroduces skin through a non-invasive procedure, the body produces new cells. The body also increases its collagen and elastin production. AS a result, your face looks tighter, smoother, and plumper.

As its name implies, a PRP for face treatment involves the application of PRP or platelet-rich plasma to the face.

In the context of anti-ageing, a PRP for face treatment involves puncturing your skin through microneedles. Then, PRP is injected into certain points of your face. These points are determined by your cosmetic doctor according to your goals.

As an alternative, your cosmetic doctor can apply PRP extracted from your own blood on your face.

Either way, your body absorbs PRP. Doing any of these significantly shortens your recovery time from microneedling while speeding up collagen production.
Results from a PRP for face treatment look natural and subtle. It can take up to a few weeks to see significant results.

The results can last for up to two years. This means that you need to get the treatment again once its effects wear off.

Moreover, a PRP for face treatment is minimally invasive. It also does not put you at risk of allergies and other complications because the treatment involves your own blood.

PRP can be used to rejuvenate almost every part of the body, so people are often enticed to get the procedure.

Vampire Facelift or Facial: Why Are They So Popular?

Vampire facials have been around for a while. However, they significantly rose in popularity because of a celebrity: Kim Kardashian.

You see, in 2013, Kardashian posted a photo of her PRP-soaked face on Instagram. This led to several new outlets asking and diving deep into the treatment.

Eventually, vampire facials became popular because more people took the treatment. It’s mainly because the treatment is quick, easy, and almost painless.

Vampire facials were made popular by celebrities.

PRP treatments increase collagen production among others.

Benefits of a Vampire Facial or Plasma Treatment for Face

Here are the several benefits a vampire facial or plasma treatment for face offers:

1. Increased Collagen Production

Around the age of 25, the body’s collagen production rate significantly decreases. It continues to go down for the rest of your life unless you do something to increase your body’s collagen production rate.

In addition, the quality of collagen produced by your body decreases as you age. Combined with a declining collagen production rate, this makes your skin vulnerable to showing signs of aging (e.g. fine lines, wrinkles, sagging skin).

A vampire facial or plasma treatment for face helps increase your body’s collagen production. By doing this, the treatment improves your skin, giving you a more youthful glow.

2. Decreased Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Fine lines and wrinkles are among the most common reasons why people get vampire facials.

These common signs of aging get treated as cell growth occurs. Moreover, the process promotes collagen and elastin production.

These two proteins are crucial to keeping your skin smooth, tight, and younger-looking.

3. Tighter, Firmer Facial Skin

As I mentioned, collagen and elastin are crucial to maintaining a more youthful look.

When your skin ages, it sags. The skin also becomes thinner. As a result, certain parts of your face including your eye, cheek, and lip areas, become noticeably thin. They also sag.

Collagen and elastin can significantly tighten your skin. Collagen plumps up your skin, while elastin makes your skin more elastic. By doing these, collagen keeps your skin firm. On the other hand, elastin makes your skin bounce back to its original form.

If you have been suffering from sagging, thin skin, a vampire facial can help.

In addition, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles gets reduced as your facial skin heals itself in response to the small wounds produced by microneedling, the first phase of a PRP treatment.

Plumping up your skin also reduces the appearance of deeply seated folds around your eyes and mouth.

4. Moisture Retention

The stronger your skin is, the more protected it becomes. In particular, the deeper layers of your skin get more protected from external irritants.

Moreover, a strong skin barrier helps you retain more moisture. This also helps unclog your pores, giving your skin the ability to absorb moisturisers.

By making your skin stronger and unclogging your pores, a vampire facial helps you retain more moisture. This helps lubricate your skin. In addition, it helps prevent acne.

5. Enhanced Texture and Tone

If you suffer from acne scars, injury scars, stretch marks, or surgical scars, a vampire facial can help.

The said PRP treatment can also help reduce the appearance of spots left by hyperpigmentation or sun damage.

Since a vampire facial helps give birth to new, healthy cells, your skin tone and texture improve.

PRP Before and After

A vampire facial is a safe and effective way to get rid of several skin issues. But how does the treatment go?

In this section, I will discuss what usually happens before, during, and after a PRP treatment or vampire facial.

A PRP treatment involves drawing your blood and injecting or applying PRP on your face.

A PRP treatment involves consulting a reputable doctor.

What Happens Before a Vampire Facial

While a vampire facial is a minimally invasive procedure, it’s best to consult a cosmetic doctor before having it. You can book a consultation with me here.

During the consultation, we will discuss your goals, medical history, and current health.

In general, healthy adults are ideal candidates for vampire facials or PRP for face treatments.

Depending on what we discussed, I will determine whether you are an ideal candidate for a vampire facial. I might also suggest complementary procedures such as natural lip fillers, liquid rhinoplasty, and non surgical eyelift.

When you agree with everything, you can book a schedule for your PRP appointment.

How to Prepare for a Vampire Facial or PRP Treatment

If you choose to get a vampire facial from my clinic, one of the top skin clinics in London, I will give you specific instructions on what to do to prepare for a vampire facial.

Generally speaking, you must do the following:

  • Arrive at the clinic with a clean, product-free, and makeup-free face.
  • Drink lots of water before your appointment to keep yourself hydrated.
  • Avoid unprotected sun exposure or purposive tanning weeks before your vampire facial.
  • Avoid excessive smoking or drinking weeks before your appointment.
  • Have someone assist or drive you home after the procedure.

A PRP treatment involves arriving at the clinic with a clean face.

A PRP treatment involves putting your blood in a centrifuge.

What Happens During a PRP Treatment for Face

A PRP treatment for face approximately takes between 30 minutes to one hour. The duration will be longer if you get complementary procedures such as non-surgical rhinoplasty or lunchtime nose job.

First, you’ll get your blood drawn. Then, your blood will be placed in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from the rest of your blood.

From there, your cosmetic doctor can follow different routes using PRP.

Your PRP can be directly injected into your skin. As an alternative, your cosmetic doctor can use microneedles to prepare your skin, then apply PRP on your face.

In some clinics, laser resurfacing can be used to prepare your skin for PRP.

What to Do After a Vampire Facial

Your face may go red after a vampire facelift or facial. Your skin might also be sensitive.

However, a vampire facelift is a minimally invasive procedure, so it requires minimal downtime.

You must also do certain things for you to properly and efficiently recover. These include avoiding touching your face hours after the treatment. You must also avoid the sun for days after the procedure.

Moreover, you can see results right after the procedure. However, it takes two to three weeks for significant results to show up.

These results can last for 12 to 18 months. The exact duration varies per patient though.

A PRP treatment involves taking care of yourself by avoiding the sun.

A vampire facial can change your life for the better. So, if you are tired of seeing fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging on your face, book a consultation with me now!
